With AHSV Vaccines availability being a problem, we may be in for a season without VACCINE PROTECTION.
PLEASE consider the following to boost and BUILD your horse, to ensure a safer season ahead.
TICKS
Keep you Horse tick free. Ticks lower the immune system and, as an added complication, can cause biliary. Our horses do not need this drain on their system ever, let alone this season. Only use register dips and injectable, non registered products for horse tick control may cause additional chemical strain on the horse, if dips and injectables are not registered for horses, there is a very real reason why not. Only spray registered horse products to horse. Many chemical repellent sprays not registered may impact the immune system, even if you do not see a reaction, can you see the damage it does to organs, once absorbed through the horses skin? Many cattle tick dips are on he market, please do not use the if not stated they are safe for horses. Horse BREATH through their skin , like we (humans) do, cattle do not, hence harsher products are used in cattle dips cattle, and are not suitable for dipping/spraying horses.
DEWORM
Almost 90% of colic’s are caused due to internal parasite. Parasites drain the horse’s immune system, and eliminate the good feed and supplements you give your horse from reaching their intended destination, i.e. your horse. The drain on a parasite burdened horse will affect your orses abiliy to remain healthy.
IMMUNE SUPPORT
Research the market and for this season makes sure your horse is on an immunity supplement. There are herbal immune blends, and many commercial products available, Get one and ensure your horse gets his daily dose. Ensure VitC, VitE VitB Complex and Selenium is included in the product
Good Multi vitamin and mineral supplement (including enzymes and Amino Acids)
A horse in nutritional balance is a horse that can withstand/cope in a season where contagious and infectious diseases may be a threat, his immune system will be functioning correctly. Ensure that your Immune Support and your multivitamin and mineral products complement each other. You can request advice from a nutritionist on this, this is to ensure that duplication is not done when providing two supplements’ (i.e. a double dose of Selenium, this is to be avoided)
BUILD THE GUT – the engine room (PROBIOTIC)
With a well-functioning gut process, your horse will be able to extract all the good feed and supplements you provide him. A good probiotic is advisable; Brewer’s Yeast is a good additive, also assisting in maintaining gut flora. The herbal market also as good herbal product, find the product of your choice and ensure you provide it daily.
MIDGE
There are many innovative ideas and recipes on the market to deter, control is nas insect. Some are controversial, and most without scientific research. This year you cannot afford to wait for research. Speak to yard owners, ensure where your horse is stabled, that they are doing all in their power to reduce the midge load, eliminating damp areas, ensuring manure is managed, applying the required and desired repellents, spraying when needed, and all lights off near and in the stales a night. Horse out stales a 10 am in morning to go and grase, and in from paddocks before 16h00.
AT ALL TIMES consult your Veterinarian or a Horse Nutritionist to build a robust process to help your horse make it through the coming season.
OUR EFFORTS TO ASSIST HORSES AND HORSE OWNERS
We will be posting the above regime followed at Wychwood Stables to ensure the horses stable there are protected. This is to ensure that all horse owners are aware of what some yards are doing.
You as an owner need to consider what route you want followed to protect your horse. We invite owners and other yards to share their regimes and innovations with us for other owners to know and learn from your experience.
As stressed above, BUILD your horse, make him strong - to be able to handle what may be a tough season ahead. Ensure all products used are designed for horse, limit the use of harsh chemicals, and ensure you track and log your horse’s vitals/temperatures, if not TWICE a day, at least daily. By understanding your horses BASELINE temperature, you will be able to detect early warning if they present themselves,or if is a problem.
